“Stop touching your face Dave.” I’m posting this now, because rules are being relaxed for political reasons. Of course it had to be on my list. If you want to torture yourself, or get a few pointers that could save your life, it’s Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion”.
Written by Scott Z Burns, it’s based on the SARS and H1N1 outbreaks, but ramped up to eleven. It’s scientifically accurate – Burns listened to scientific experts, unlike the current US or UK governments, so it’s frighteningly prescient. It follows multiple characters (a great cast) to tell the story of a deadly virus outbreak.
It sounds bleak but it’s incredibly good. The script is fantastic and Soderbergh and his editor, Stephen Mirrione (who won an Oscar for Soderbergh’s “Traffic” and edited all his “Oceans” films), do a great job holding all the multiple story strands together. And it has a “kind-of” happy ending. So I hope we have that to look forward to.
