Betty Blue

When I was a student I think this poster was on the wall of almost everyone I knew. “Betty Blue” is based on the book “37°2 le matin” by Philippe Djian and is written and directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix, who also made the weird and wonderful “Diva” (which I might get around to posting, and you should really, really check out).

Oscar and BAFTA nominated, it’s the doomed romantic tale of a struggling writer who meets an engaging, free-spirited young woman. It eventually becomes clear she has mental health issues and, of course, it ends in tragedy. I mean, it’s French!

Jean-Hugues Anglade and Béatrice Dalle in the leads are just fantastic, the film looks amazing and I don’t think Gabriel Yared is capable of writing a bad score. It’s a beautiful, but also heartbreaking movie.
