Another heart-warming British comedy. Another ‘fish out of water’ story (sometimes, maybe, literally). And another on my list that is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In Bill Forsyth’s “Local Hero” an American oil executive is sent to Scotland to negotiate the purchase of a coastal village so his company can build an oil refinery.
It has its roots in classic comedies such as Ealing Studios’ “Whisky Galore”. Forsyth’s script and direction are wonderful, Chris Menges’ photography is beautiful, and it has a fantastic cast – Peter Riegert, Dennis Lawson, Fulton Mackay, Peter Capaldi, Jenny Seagrove and Burt Lancaster (who cost a quarter of the budget, supposedly). It’s an absolute delight.
